Steve Garufi, Founder of Salida Christian Counseling
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it.
Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” -Howard Thurman
A resident of Chaffee County, Colorado for nine years, Steve Garufi earned his B.A.
in Political Science at Montclair State University in New Jersey in 1994 and
gained his Masters in Counseling at Denver Seminary in 2002.
He has been a Licensed Professional Counselor (#4201) since 2005.
For over ten years, Steve has practiced in a variety of clinical contexts,
including community mental health, outpatient drug/alcohol addiction work, homeless ministry,
a residential facility for troubled teenagers and telephonic counseling specializing in men's issues.
Steve's areas of interest include depression, anxiety,
matters of self-image, grief and loss, divorce recovery, counseling for teens and families, the plight of the fatherless,
healing for those injured in church and ministry settings, and empowering others to pursue their God-given dreams.
Steve is passionate about helping his clients feel understood in their time of suffering --
with their feelings validated, their life story honored and their weaknesses, mistakes, failures, longings, etc., accepted without a hint of judgment.
Steve is not an arrogant "know-it-all" therapist. He wants to learn from those who have turned their pain and suffering into something beautiful.
An avid outdoorsman, Steve enjoys hiking, mountain climbing and
exploring the beautiful landscapes of the West.
You will likely run into him on the trails around Salida and Buena Vista. Steve has bicycled across the USA twice
and is an author of Under a Triumphant Sky: A Bike Across America Story,
a memoir about his first cross-country trip.
